[Imposition Engine - GCW] How To Add Registration Marks

R
Written by Roman Aldunate

This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to effectively use registration marks in printing processes. It covers the various options available for adding registration marks, including core controls, page selection, modes of operation, mark types, and customization settings.

Core Controls

Is Executed

Toggle this ON to enable registration marks. Turn OFF to temporarily disable the step without removing it.

Pages

Choose where registration marks should appear:

Single

Apply the same setting to all selected pages.

Custom Selection

Apply marks only to chosen pages.

Selected Pages

Dropdown options may include:

  • All pages

  • Front only / Back only

  • Specific page numbers

  • Page ranges

Mode: Auto vs Manual

This is the most important setting.

Auto Mode (Default)

In Auto mode, the system automatically decides which corner to place registration marks in based on:

  • Flip direction:

    • Short edge flip

    • Long edge flip

This ensures correct alignment for:

  • Duplex printing

  • Perfecting presses

  • Foiling machines

  • Cutting tables that expect consistent corner anchors

✔ Recommended for 99% of jobs
✔ Zero configuration required
✔ Automatically correct for duplex orientation

Manual Mode

Select Manual if you want full control over placement.

You can explicitly choose the corner(s):

  • Top-Left

  • Top-Right

  • Bottom-Left

  • Bottom-Right

  • Multiple corners (if needed)

Use Manual mode when:

  • You are aligning to custom dies

  • Press requires non-standard alignment marks

  • Working with specialty finishing (hot foil, embossing, spot varnish)

  • The job needs marks on all four sides

Mark Type

Choose the shape and style of the registration mark:

Available types:

  • Arc

  • Circle

  • Cross

  • Dot

  • Rectangle

Each type serves different machine preferences:

Type

Best For

Cross

Most standard print workflows

Dot

High-precision optical sensors

Circle

Foiling / varnish alignment

Rectangle

CNC, flatbed, or packaging systems

Arc

Specialty alignment workflows

Offset

Distance from the artwork/boundary to the mark.

Example:
Offset 5 → mark placed 5 units away from artwork.

Size

Defines the dimension of the registration mark (diameter, radius, or width, depending on type).

Stroke Settings

Stroke Color

Choose stroke color (e.g., Black).

Code

Map spot color name if required by finishing equipment.

Example:

  • REG_MARK

  • CUT_KNIFE

  • FOIL_ALIGN

Thickness

Set stroke width. Typical values: 0.2–0.5.

Fill Settings

Some mark types can be filled (circle, rectangle).

You can configure:

  • Fill color

  • Fill spot color name

  • Fill overprint

Rotation

Rotate the mark to match the machine orientation requirements.

Useful when:

  • Marks appear on angled or skewed edges

  • Machine sensors read marks at specific angles

Overprint Controls

Overprint Fill

Prevents ink knockouts for filled marks.

Overprint Stroke

Ensures mark strokes print cleanly over the underlying artwork.
