How to Make Granular Markup Adjustments within an estimate

P
Written by Pradeep Sankaran

This article explains how to make granular markup adjustments within an estimate for jobs that require precise control at the substrate, machine, or other cost levels.

Overview

Within any estimate, you can already adjust the overall price model (e.g., gross profit percentage) to quickly recalculate the estimate. However, some jobs require more granular adjustments—for example, adjusting only the markup on substrate costs or labor costs separately.

When to Use Granular Markup Adjustments

Use this feature when:

  • You need to adjust markup for specific cost components (substrate, labor, machine, etc.) rather than the entire estimate

  • You're working on custom jobs that require precise pricing to win

  • You want to fine-tune margins on specific cost buckets while leaving others unchanged

How to Access Granular Markup Editing

  1. Open your estimate

  2. Go to Price Breakdown

  3. For the price option you want to adjust, click View and Edit

Understanding the Markup View

The estimate is broken down into six key cost buckets:

  • Substrate

  • Other Material

  • Labor

  • Machine

  • Outwork

  • Delivery

For each bucket, you'll see:

  • Cost: The base cost value

  • Markup Percentage: The percentage applied (pulled from your product setup sheet and pricing rules)

  • Total Estimate Value: The calculated total including markup

You'll also see:

  • Substrate Cost Percentage: Substrate cost ex. markup, divided by total estimate

  • VA (Value Added) Percentage

  • Gross Profit Percentage

Making Markup Adjustments

  1. Click on any markup percentage field you want to change

  2. Enter your new value (e.g., change 70% to 150%)

  3. Click anywhere outside the field

  4. The estimate recalculates automatically with updated totals and percentages

Adjusting Overall Price Model After Granular Changes

After making granular markup changes, you can still adjust the overall price model:

  1. Locate the Gross Profit Percentage (or your configured price model) field

  2. Enter your desired value (e.g., round up to 40%)

  3. The estimate recalculates

Important: When you override the overall price model, the granular markup fields become grayed out and locked. A message will indicate that these cannot be edited unless you reset the override.

Resetting to Edit Granular Markups Again

If you've overridden the overall price model but want to return to granular editing:

  1. Click Reset on the overall price model field

  2. The granular markup fields become editable again

Applying Your Changes

When you're satisfied with your adjustments:

  1. Click Update

  2. All changes are applied and visible in the estimate summary
